Additional funding

Additional sources of financial support

Help when approaching the end of your course

In certain cases, students can obtain support for up to 12 months when completing their course. This is in the form of loans on which interest is payable and can be obtained when the student has been allowed to enter themselves for the examinations.

Interest-bearing loans

  • for a different course, after a change in subject with good reason, are available when the maximum study period, which is reduced by the amount of time spent on the previous course, has been exceeded
  • when the conditions are met for a second course to be studied
  • for the twelve month period of help for students taking their final examinations

Educational loans

There is a new source of support for those in the advanced stages of their study: the education loan ("Bildungskredit"). This loan can be awarded along with BAFöG funding to meet exceptional costs which are not covered by BAFöG.

The awarding of these loans is governed by the Guidelines for the Awarding of Educational Loans, issued by the Ministry for Education and Research There is no statutory right to this funding. Unlike BAFöG funding, the loans are not dependent on the income of the students' parents or spouse.

Further information and application forms for educational loans can be obtained from the Amt für Ausbildungsförderung (Office of Educational Support). The claim should be sent to:

Bundesverwaltungsamt
Abt. IV Bildungskredit
50728 Köln
Germany
