BAföG - Financial Support
Simpler. Better. More.
The most important source of funding for study is grants provided in accordance with the law known in German as the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz - BAföG for short.
Students can be paid financial support of up to €670 per month. There is an extra grant for students with children in the amount of € 113 per month and for the second or more children an additional € 85 per child per month. An extra application is required for this. Applications for BAföG financial support should be made immediately upon being accepted or enrolled onto a course, or after re-registration. If the required conditions are met, financial support will be paid for the month in which the course of study is started at the university or college onwards, starting at the earliest with the month in which the application is made. Usually, a decision to provide funding will be taken for one year at a time.
Who is eligible for funding?
German students will usually receive BAföG funding. In certain circumstances foreign students can receive this funding too.
First course of study, additional study, change of course
A student's first course of study will usually qualify for funding, as will a second course, additional education or an MA course which builds on a BA. A change of course before the start of the 4th semester will not affect eligibility for funding if good reason is given.
